THE ARCHIVE'S FILTERING GRAMMAR

Five facets, applied in any combination.

The search field is not a black box. Every query can be narrowed by the same five dimensions our editors use internally — date, section, bureau, original outlet, and X-Score band.

  1. 01

    Date range

Specify a year, a quarter, or a day-resolution window. ISO 8601 accepted (2020-03-01..2020-03-31). Useful for tracing a story from first report to follow-on coverage.

    e.g. after:2024-01-01 before:2024-12-31
  2. 02

    Section

Politics, Markets, Technology, World, Culture, Science, Opinion. A story can belong to up to two sections; the section facet ranks by the editor-assigned primary assignment.

    e.g. section:markets
  3. 03

    Bureau

Filter by the 11 X-News bureaus that filed or desk-edited the piece — New York, London, Berlin, Singapore, São Paulo, Dubai, Nairobi, Tokyo, Sydney, Brussels, Toronto.

    e.g. bureau:brussels
  4. 04

    Original outlet

Every archived story links back to three or more independent corroborating sources. Use the outlet facet to find original reporting from a specific wire, paper, or agency in the index.

    e.g. outlet:reuters OR outlet:ft
  5. 05

    X-Score band

The proprietary X-Score™ credibility rating (1–10) appears on every headline and on every archived article. Filter to high-band items when you need source-grade material only.

    e.g. xscore:>8
